The John A. Feagin Jr., MD Leadership Program was created to honor Dr. John Feagin, Jr.’s dedication to developing ethical leaders of character.
The Feagin Leadership Program provides select students, residents, and fellows with a year-long leadership development experience.
The program includes didactic sessions, individual coaching, and a team project. It concludes with the annual Feagin Leadership Forum held each May, during which time we bring in guest speakers to discuss leadership challenges across many domains.
Students and house staff can apply for the Feagin Leadership Program in the late spring. For additional information on this program, contact Executive Director Joe Doty or at 919-684-0512.
2020 Leadership Forum
The 11th Annual Feagin Leadership Forum was held virtually in May and more than 500 attendees from across the United States, South America, and Europe participated and discussed the timely and important topic of emotional intelligence and leadership in today’s world. The speakers, scholars, breakout sessions, discussions – everything was pertinent and impactful for leaders of all professions.
The 2020 Forum:
- Showcased the 30 Feagin Scholars’ growth since starting the program last September. Their presentations were a testament to their coaches, experiences, resiliency, and their individual and collective talent. The team projects were outstanding contributions to our institutions and communities.
- Brought together leaders from healthcare, business, the military, and athletics to share ideas on how better emotional intelligence leads to more effective leadership.
- Connected leaders from all over the world – the Feagin Community of Leaders – who shared ideas on emotional intelligence and leadership virtually in breakout rooms and chat discussions.
One participant shared “Thank you for allowing me to take part in this amazing journey and to improve my emotional intelligence during this global pandemic. At this time in our nation’s history, we will benefit from this Forum…now more than ever.”
Participant Steven Gaines said “Peri-op initiative is SUPER! Changing the culture around the process from walking into the hospital as a patient to leaving the hospital involves so many people. How do you get ALL of those involved to commit to yet another meeting–a meeting in which EACH of the participants is considered equal? Respect is so important for everyone. And recognition for “the little guy” goes a long way to getting people to buy into what ultimately becomes a culture change. Great presentation!”
One of the Scholar teams shared a unique (and funny!) interpretation of how the coronavirus has impacted all our lives. Check it out here!
Feagin Alumni and Covid-19
These are unpredictable and unsettling times. The alumni of the Feagin Leadership Program are on the ‘front lines’ of this pandemic. We believe the Feagin Program addresses and develops the exact kind of skills that leaders in health care need to lead in times like this. They are sharing some of their thoughts and inspirational stories….
