Residents enjoy competitive benefits, including health, dental, and life insurance; as well as three-weeks plus one-week Christmas/New Year’s holiday paid vacation and an allotment to finance approved education-related expenses. Leave of absence is possible; however, stipulations may apply and PTD approval is required.
The 2020-2021 yearly stipend ranges from $58,020 (PGY-1) to $67,788 (PGY-5/Chief) (https://gme.duke.edu/training-programs/applicants/stipends)
The stipends for 2021-2022 will increase. The increase will be determined in the Spring of 2021.
- PGY1 residents receive two weeks per year
- PGY2-PGY5 residents receive three weeks per year
- All receive Christmas or New Year's holiday time off
If you present a paper at a meeting, you can attend that meeting in addition to your yearly chosen meeting or vacation.
Resident Education Fund
Residents are given an educational allotment to finance orthopaedic textbooks, scientific meetings, podium presentations and poster presentations. Scientific meetings must meet the approval of the director of residency curriculum.
