Dara Purvis, MHA will be joining our department as the new Chief Administrative Officer on March 18, 2019.

Dara was born in Florida and grew up in Southwest Missouri. She spent her time there reading, hiking, and spending time in the outdoors.  She earned her undergraduate degree at William Jewell College, near Kansas City, Missouri where she majored in English and Sociology.  She continued her education and obtained her Masters of Health Administration from Wilkes University in Pennsylvania.

She has been married for 27 years to her husband, Alan, who is an architect and educator / critic at various schools of architecture.  Alan obtained his Master’s in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University.  Together they have 3 children; 2 daughters, Bailey – 20 and Ally - 19 and 1 son, Benjamin - 15.  Their daughters attend the University of Arizona and their son is a freshman in high school.

Dara’s career in healthcare has spanned 25 years with 9 of those years in academic medicine.  She has found the most joy in her career while working in academic medicine and is excited to join Duke.  Her professional experiences include financial analysis, clinical practice management/leadership for 10 different medical specialties, project management for new healthcare software development, and extensive clinical / research / educational growth while in academic medicine.

Dara, Alan and Benjamin enjoy high adventure outdoor activities and taking fishing trips together.  On her own time, Dara is an avid reader.  A recent inspiring and memorable trip for Dara and Alan was a motorcycle / camping tour of Death Valley, California, Moab, Utah and Rocky Mountain National Park.

According to Dara:

“I am honored to join and serve the Duke Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.  I have a tremendous passion for all aspects of academic medicine and look forward to working with Dr. Alman and the team of exceptionally talented faculty, learners, and staff in the Department and the Duke community.”
