FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence

Duke FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence

Duke University Health System is one of three FIFA Medical Centres of Excellence in the United States and one of 49 across the world. FIFA, the international governing body of football (soccer), awards this designation to established centers that have demonstrated leadership in soccer medicine with facilities and programs designed specifically for the sport. Duke collaborates with U.S. Soccer and the other FIFA Medical Centres of Excellence to provide soccer athletes with the highest-quality, sport-specific care.

The Duke-FIFA Center was established in 2010 under the leadership of orthopaedic surgeon William E. Garrett, Jr, MD, Ph.D. Prior to his death in 2019, Dr. Garrett was a specialist in sports medicine for over 30 years. He served as the Medical Director of the U.S. Soccer Federation and Team Physician for the U.S. Men and Women’s National Soccer teams. He was also a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Society and was named Director of Research for the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) by the FIFA Medical Committee. He served as team physician for the Duke University’s men’s soccer team for many years. Dr. Garrett passed away in 2019 but his legacy continues in the mission of the Duke-FIFA Center.
