Dr. Wittstein is an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery with research and clinical interests in the shoulder, elbow, and knee in pediatric and adult populations. In the shoulder, she has studied the outcomes of rotator cuff repairs, the surgical treatment of injuries to the long head biceps, and the use of telemedicine to evaluate shoulder pathology.
Dr. Wittstein is also studying the relationship between menopause and hormone replacement therapy and the development of frozen shoulder in women. In the elbow, she is interested in gymnastics and youth throwing-related injuries. Areas of interest in the knee include ACL mechanisms of injury, ACL and meniscus injuries concerning the development of post-traumatic arthritis, and the effects of blood in the knee on joint health and meniscus healing.
Dr. Wittstein is a co-investigator on several NIH grants, working with Louis DeFrate, PhD, and Amy McNulty, PhD, on studies of these knee-related topics. She sees patients at Duke Sports Medicine Cary, Duke Orthopaedics of Apex, and Duke Orthopaedics of Heritage. Dr. Wittstein performs surgery at Duke Arringdon and Duke Raleigh and conducts research as part of her work at all these sites.
