The Division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) within Duke Orthopaedic Surgery is dedicated to optimizing function, reducing pain, and improving quality of life for patients with musculoskeletal, neurological, and complex rehabilitation challenges. Our team of physiatrists brings expertise in the non-surgical management of orthopaedic conditions, spine care, sports injuries, and rehabilitation following neurologic impairment, trauma, or surgery.
We take a patient-centered, collaborative approach to care, working closely with orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, and other medical specialists, as well as a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and chiropractors, to develop individualized treatment plans that align with each patient’s goals, medical conditions, and lifestyle. Our services include diagnostic evaluations, image-guided procedures, electrodiagnostic testing, and rehabilitation strategies that emphasize functional recovery and long-term wellness.
In addition to these core services, the PM&R division provides specialized care for individuals with Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Limb Loss, Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury, and Spasticity, offering advanced rehabilitation strategies and adaptive solutions to maximize independence and quality of life.
Duke’s Adult Spina Bifida Clinic, launched in partnership between Orthopaedics and Neurology, exemplifies our commitment to interdisciplinary care, providing comprehensive, lifelong support for patients with complex needs.
The division also plays a vital role in education and research. Our faculty actively trains medical students, residents, and fellows and contributes to innovative research in areas such as pain management, neurorehabilitation, and musculoskeletal outcomes. Members of our faculty are recognized as national leaders in PM&R, including active volunteer and leadership roles in the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Through clinical excellence and academic leadership, we strive to advance the field of rehabilitation medicine and expand access to high-quality care across the Duke Health system.
