Duke employees, including trainees, can choose from 4 different health plans subsidized for residents and fellows. Individuals may choose coverage for themselves or for children and/or a spouse or same-sex partner. Additionally, Duke Primary Care offers a concierge scheduling line for GME residents and fellows to facilitate their ability to establish care for themselves or immediate family members—review options here.
Disability & Life Insurance
Trainees are provided specific disability and life insurance policies, and have the option to purchase additional disability and life insurance coverage at attractive rates.
Stipend
Duke University Hospital stipulates that Fellow trainees are paid at the PGY 6 stipend level, which is contingent upon their successful completion of a five-year orthopaedic residency training program. Fellow trainees are not paid higher than the PGY 6 level based on successful completion of postgraduate training prior to fellowship training/ employment at Duke. Current stipends can be viewed on the Duke Graduate Medical Education website. Stipends are anticipated to increase yearly and generally announced in the Spring.
Time-off (vacation/meeting)
- Fellows receive three weeks per year
- Fellows receive Christmas or New Year's holiday time-off
Fellow Education Fund
Fellows are generally provided an educational allotment for purchasing orthopaedic textbook(s) or attending a scientific meeting at the expense of his/her fellowship training program.
Contract–Agreement of Appointment (ACGME/ICGME Programs)
Duke University Hospital offers training programs in 100 ACGME-accredited programs and many special fellowships. An example of the “Contract – Agreement of Appointment” may be viewed on the Duke Graduate Medical Education website.
