Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

This November, the Duke Orthopaedic Surgery Department proudly honors Native American Heritage Month. This celebration recognizes the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Native American communities. We are especially proud to highlight members of our department who represent Native American heritage, including Dr. Mike Bolognesi, a member of the Lumbee Tribe.

As we reflect on this important month, we also acknowledge that we work on the traditional homelands of Native peoples. We pay our respects to the elders, both past and present, and express our gratitude for their hospitality. The land we live and work in is home to the Eno, Tuscarora, Occaneechi, and other tribes.

Embracing diversity is essential to our mission, and we recognize the strength it brings to our patient care and the field of orthopaedic surgery. It’s crucial to note that many musculoskeletal diseases, such as osteoarthritis, are more prevalent in Native American populations, leading to a disproportionate representation among our patients.

Let us take this opportunity to appreciate and honor the invaluable contributions of Native Americans in healthcare and beyond. Thank you for joining us in this recognition.

All the best,

Ben
