Duke Orthopaedics proudly welcomed Dr. Dean G. Sotereanos, MD, Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of Hand Surgery Specialists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, for the 12th annual George S.E. Aitken, MD, Lectureship. Dr. Sotereanos delivered a thought-provoking presentation titled "Humility, Empathy, and the Wisdom of the Ancients: A Call to Young Surgeons."
Dr. Sotereanos emphasized the importance of defining one's vision for success, whether through groundbreaking discoveries, serving underserved communities, achieving work-life balance, or pursuing other meaningful goals. He urged attendees to stay true to their values, think long-term, and maintain passion for helping others rather than succumbing to external pressures like societal expectations or financial rewards.

The presentation also highlighted the role of mentors, with heartfelt tributes to Dr. Sotereanos' mentor, Dr. James Urbaniak, whom he described as an inspiring leader akin to the ancient Spartan King Leonidas. Dr. Urbaniak’s unwavering support, personal handwritten letters, and leadership-by-example style were celebrated as key influences in Dr. Sotereanos’ career.
Young surgeons were encouraged to concentrate on their strengths and passions, define their measures of success, and remain grounded to prevent burnout. Aristotle wisely reminds us, "Reflect not only on what you can do, but what you should do." If completing a case requires an additional 30 minutes, take the time—it could significantly impact a person's quality of life, as your actions carry profound weight and responsibility.
Dr. Sotereanos shared a valuable lesson from an attending doctor: "Be bold, but don't be cavalier." Surgery, he explained, is a symphony of teamwork. When you care for your operating room (OR) team, their respect for you will only grow. Creating an encouraging and enjoyable environment—whether through music, interaction, or positivity—helps foster a collaborative atmosphere. Always take the time to thank your team for their hard work and contributions, as this builds a strong foundation of mutual respect and camaraderie.
