William Jiranek, MD, Named Duke Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery

Jiranek’s distinguished professorship honors his pioneering research, program-building, and holistic approach to optimizing joint health.

The Duke Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is proud to congratulate William A. Jiranek, MD, professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, vice chair for Practice Innovation, co‑chair of COORDS, and chair of APT, on his appointment as Duke Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, one of the university’s highest academic honors.

Jiranek is among 22 faculty members in the School of Medicine recognized in the 2026 cohort of distinguished professors, approved by the Duke University Board of Trustees and effective July 1, 2025, or thereafter. Honorees will be celebrated at the university’s annual Distinguished Professorship event on May 18.

A nationally and internationally recognized leader in hip and knee arthroplasty, Jiranek’s career reflects extraordinary scholarship, program-building, and leadership that have reshaped the care of patients with osteoarthritis. His influential research and thought leadership have advanced understanding of prosthetic joint infection, informed health policy related to the economics of musculoskeletal care, and—most importantly—improved outcomes for patients.

Central to Jiranek’s impact is his holistic approach to joint health. He emphasizes the integration of physical activity, nutrition, psychological well-being, and coping skills as essential components of managing osteoarthritis and optimizing surgical outcomes. This philosophy is embodied in Duke’s Joint Health Program, which he founded—a multidisciplinary initiative that empowers patients through education, self-management strategies, and comprehensive nonoperative care for hip and knee osteoarthritis.

This distinguished professorship recognizes not only Jiranek’s scientific and clinical excellence but also his enduring commitment to innovation, mentorship, and advancing the mission of Duke Orthopaedics. We are grateful for his leadership and proud to celebrate this well-deserved honor.
