Duke Orthopaedics Excels at AO Trauma NA Basic Principles Course in Houston

Duke Orthopaedics had a strong presence at the AO Trauma North America Basic Principles of Fracture Management course, held in Houston, Texas, with faculty and residents in attendance and earning top honors.

The course focused on applying AO principles to trauma and trauma reconstruction, emphasizing stability concepts, reduction techniques, and psychomotor skills for orthopedic implant application. It brought together leading educators and emerging surgeons to advance excellence in fracture care.

Malcolm R. DeBaun, MD, an assistant professor and section chief of Orthopaedic Trauma, led the Duke team and received the Rosen Faculty Teaching Award, which recognizes his exceptional dedication to hands-on instruction and mentorship. This esteemed award honors Professor Howard Rosen’s legacy and is awarded to a table instructor who demonstrates tireless and enthusiastic teaching in AO labs.

Among the residents attending were:

  • Jacob Torrey, MD (PGY-4) – Winner of the Best Case Presentation Award, Title: Unsolved Case–Polytrauma
  • Taylor Bradley, MD (PGY-2); Alexander Parsons, MD (PGY-2); Micah White, MD (PGY-2), and Caroline Wu, MD (PGY-2)

Their participation highlighted Duke’s commitment to surgical education and excellence in trauma care. The AO Trauma NA community continues to foster innovation and mentorship, improving patient outcomes across North America and beyond.
