Accessing rehabilitation services can be a significant challenge for individuals with neurological injuries. Insurance limitations, transportation barriers, and socioeconomic disparities often prevent people from receiving the continued care necessary for optimal recovery. Durham Neuro Camp, led by the Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program, is bridging this gap through a no-cost, community-based neurorehabilitation program designed to empower participants and promote health equity.
Under the guidance of faculty members, Dr. Jody Feld, PT, DPT, PhD, Dr. Kelly Reynolds, PT, DPT, PhD, and Dr. Rob Farrell, PT, DPT, along with 20 clinician mentors (physical, occupational, and speech therapists), 20 doctoral students worked closely with community members requiring neurorehabilitation this year. Ten individuals with neurological conditions and their families received personalized rehabilitation services tailored to their unique needs.
Dr. Feld described Durham Neuro Camp as more than just a training ground for DPT students—it’s an immersive learning experience that fosters clinical excellence, advocacy, and a deeper understanding of health equity. Through this program, DPT students gain:
- Practical skills in neurorehabilitation assessment and intervention
- Exposure to systemic barriers preventing access to care
- A stronger awareness of social determinants of health and their impact on recovery
- Opportunities to advocate for health equity through compassionate, patient-centered care
Transformative Learning Through Hands-On Care
Student reflections highlight the profound impact of Durham Neuro Camp on their professional development:
Holly Brown, SPT: "This experience has empowered me as an aspiring neurophysical therapist. Many participants urgently needed these services, yet likely wouldn’t have had access outside of this program. As future healthcare providers, we must understand the unique needs of our communities, and providing pro bono care is a powerful way to make a tangible impact."
Kaila Claiborne, SPT: "Durham Neuro Camp taught me that physical therapy goes beyond clinical decision-making and evidence-based interventions. It’s about creating a space where patients feel safe expressing emotions, cheering them through setbacks, and recognizing the privilege of helping individuals regain independence."
Madison Imrick, SPT: "This experience reinforced the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. Working alongside a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and an Occupational Therapist (OT) enhanced our participants’ outcomes. We developed a creative intervention using music and movement to improve upper extremity mobility—seeing our participant light up with joy reaffirmed how collaborative care transforms rehabilitation."
Empowering Participants Through Holistic Care
For individuals served by Durham Neuro Camp, the program provides far more than rehabilitation—it fosters hope, connection, and empowerment.
Participants receive:
- Individualized and group activity sessions tailored to personal goals
- Holistic support from an interdisciplinary team
- A welcoming environment that prioritizes dignity and respect
Camp participant Bobby Anderson reflected: "At Durham Neuro Camp, I realized that true progress happens in every unexpected step forward, driven by the energy and encouragement of students who pushed me beyond what I thought was possible. It was a blessing, and every hour-long commute was worth it."
Steven Narron, a program attendee, shared: "I learned about Durham Neuro Camp from a former Duke PT student who now works in outpatient therapy. The experience was incredibly positive—I enjoyed laughing and working hard. I would highly recommend it; the positivity was amazing."
Advancing Health Equity Through Service Learning
Reflecting on the broader mission, Dr. Feld emphasized: "Educational programs play a critical role in advancing social justice, and Durham Neuro Camp exemplifies this philosophy. Integrating service learning with compassionate care is a model for future rehabilitation initiatives that break down barriers and prioritize equity-driven healthcare."
Durham Neuro Camp continues transforming lives by combining education, advocacy, and compassionate care. Learning is most impactful when it serves a greater purpose—benefiting students and entire communities.
