Stipend
The stipends for Duke trainees are based on post-graduate year (number of years of training). Stipends are anticipated to increase yearly and are generally announced in the Spring. Current stipends can be viewed on the Duke Graduate Medical Education website.
Relocation Benefit
$1000 provided to GME trainees who are new employees of Duke University/Health System and are entering their first Duke GME program.
Health Insurance Coverage
House Staff have a choice of four plans, two at no cost to the trainee (Duke Basic and Duke Select), discounted premiums for GME Trainees, dental and vision coverage - https://hr.duke.edu/benefits/medical.
Vacation/Leave
Per academic year, Residents are provided paid time-off for; twenty (20) weekdays, plus eight (8) days (if needed) for bereavement, brief acute illness of trainee or family member, or personal/childcare emergences, with an additional two (2) personal days for elective appointments with healthcare providers.
Call Rooms
Orthopaedic Surgery has access to three (3) call rooms; two (2) are unisex and one (1) is for females only. The primary/largest call room has three (3) beds, one (1) full bathroom, two (2) TV’s, two (2) computer PIN stations, two (2) telephones, printer, and refrigerator.
Fatigue Ride Home
The GME Office provides all GME residents and fellows taxi service to assist in the management of fatigue; providing transportation home and back to work the following day.
House Staff Gym
House Staff have access to a 24-hour fitness center (free of charge) located on Duke’s main campus.
On-Call Meal Plan
House Staff who work overnight between 7:00p-5:30a are provided a credit for food.
Parking
House Staff (at no cost ~$1,400 benefit annually) have access to 24-hour parking located in the Research Drive Parking Garage (located within walking distance of the Duke University Hospital).
Malpractice Insurance
Malpractice insurance is provided to Trainees at Duke through Durham Casualty Company, Ltd.; the coverage provided is in an amount greater than $3 million each incident/$10 million annual aggregate. This policy provides coverage on a claims-made basis with reporting endorsement coverage provided.
Resident Education Fund
Residents can access funding from their Faculty Research Advisor for podium and poster presentations. Scientific meetings must meet the approval of the program director.
Moonlighting
Residents PGY-2 through PGY-5 are eligible for internal moonlighting to participate in home-call at the nearby Duke Regional Hospital (less than 10 miles from Duke University Hospital).
Surgical Loupes/X-Ray Apron/Thyroid Collar
The orthopaedic department is budgeted to purchase surgical loupes and an x-ray apron/thyroid collar for each resident.
Additional Benefits
