Q&A with Dr. Rocos
Q: What brings you joy?
A: Although perhaps cliched, I enjoy my family and sharing life with them. I have a passion for travel and am fortunate to have visited every continent many times during a long career as an expedition medicine doctor. I share this with my wife and children; we have explored many countries together. As all good Europeans should, I enjoy Formula 1 motor racing, though I am increasingly drawn to the pickup trucks of NC!
Q: Why did you choose a career in orthopaedics?
A: I chose orthopaedic spinal surgery for the challenge it poses every day. Diagnosing patients and choosing from a broad range of treatment options is a challenging but exciting daily prospect. I enjoy the cut and thrust of urgent care, the marathon of deformity surgery, and the scholarship of academic endeavor- it gives me inner peace and gets me up each day. I am happiest in the OR, overcoming obstacles and problems while seeing the light of understanding in trainees. At Duke, I've found like-minded people to work alongside and a place where I feel very much at home.
Q: What excites you about this role at Duke?
A: The opportunity to work with thought leaders and pioneers in surgery and in an environment where the standard is so high. This position is the opportunity to rise to the very top of the profession and deliver the best care in the world for patients while pushing the science of orthopaedic surgery forward.
