Corey Simon is the recipient of The Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging (K76); a collaboration between The National Institute on Aging (NIA), the American Federation for Aging Research, and the John A. Hartford Foundation. The purpose of the Beeson Award is to support early-stage clinician-investigators who have begun to establish research programs and demonstrate leadership in the field of aging research. The award will provide Dr. Simon with $1 million in salary, career development, and research support over five years. Dr. Simon’s project goal is to identify a clinical phenotype of older adults with chronic low back pain who experience high physiological reactivity to painful movement; and subsequently, have a higher risk for downstream disability. Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and the majority of older adults who seek care for low back pain report persistent disability a year later.
