Duke Orthopaedics Arringdon Clinic Welcomes New HCA and Nurse Manager

Duke Orthopaedics Arringdon Clinic welcomes the new Health Center Administrator (HCA), Erik Carvalho, PT, DPT, MHA, and Nurse Manager, Heather Kelly, RN, BSN.

Carvalho began his professional career at Duke Health as a Physical Therapist at the Page Road and North Duke Street clinics. He has had the opportunity to serve as a clinician, educator, and administrator, playing an integral role in the ambulatory growth of the Department of Rehabilitation Services. 

He grew up on the Central Coast of California. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of San Francisco before moving to North Carolina in 2008 for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Duke University, where he met his wife, Marissa. He received his Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2019.

The Carvalho's have two children, Luka and Lilly Ana, and the family enjoys visiting the mountains of North Carolina, Disney Cruises, and frequenting the Durham restaurant scene. His hobbies include eating, playing soccer, golf, poker, and hiking with his family.

Kelly is an Assistant Nurse Manager and manages a large team of emergency nurses, techs, paramedics, and all travel nurses for the Duke University Hospital Emergency Department. She is a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). She began her medical career as a nurse in the emergency room at Duke after graduating from Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON).

She is a passionate, determined, and hard-working leader who strives to help staff reach their full potential and pursue their passions at work and outside the workplace. She is passionate about safe and compassionate patient care, and developing a work environment that is supportive and appreciated to help decrease burnout of staff.  

Kelly grew up in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated with her first Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science with a minor in athletic training from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. She obtained her bachelor of science in nursing later in life from DUSON.

Outside of work, she loves creating community, volunteers in various settings, coaches high school women’s lacrosse, and helps various non-profits. She loves the outdoors, and is an avid triathlete, having completed several total Ironman distance triathlons and most recently qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI.
