Last week, the Duke Fuqua School of Business hosted a Health Sector Management Bootcamp course. Erica Taylor, MD, Weekend Executive MBA '20, shared insights on her experience as an orthopaedic surgeon and influential Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) leader.

This was the second year Dr. Taylor was invited to lecture on DEI in healthcare to MBA students pursuing additional Health Sector Management (HSM) certification. Part of the student’s program experience is their participation in the Health Sector Management "Bootcamp," which includes five full days of education and teamwork framed around various areas within healthcare.

As a Fuqua graduate, Dr. Taylor was honored to receive a faculty appointment at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business in 2021. Through this partnership, she provides education and mentorship focused on diversity, inclusion, and health equity in complex healthcare systems to multiple cohorts of MBA students each academic year.

Dr. Taylor shared, “What makes this endeavor so unique is that my talk was embedded as part of the core curriculum of the HSM Bootcamp, amongst sessions on pharma, health markets, value-based care, and other industry topics. For me, this represents the evolution of our institution and society towards recognizing DEI as an integral part of true, effective healthcare leadership and care delivery, as opposed to historical views of DEI as a siloed or separate area of volunteerism. My talk was titled: "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Healthcare: Moving Beyond the Business Case."

She continued, “I am honored to guide healthcare leaders (present and future) towards the importance of translating health equity from promise to practice, and the ubiquitous value that it brings to ALL of us is an unbelievably rewarding experience.”
