Paul J.W. Tawney, MD, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, will retire on Feb. 3, 2023.

“I came to Duke in July 2003 through my work with the North Carolina Orthopaedics Clinic (NCOC). Scott Kelley, MD, started the NCOC and asked me to join the Duke practice. It was one of the best personal and professional decisions I have ever made,” he says.

“Physical medicine has been such a rewarding field, and I want to thank everyone for their collegiality and the outstanding patient care we have collectively offered. This supportive spirit is what makes Duke such a fantastic place to work. A prime example came through my work with the Threatened Limb Work Group, which gathered the talents of plastic surgeons, wound care specialists, and orthopaedic doctors and surgeons. Our goal was to join to make the best possible treatment solutions for our patients.

“My recommendation for new Duke orthopaedics colleagues is simple: take care of yourself, pick your path, and collaborate. So many wonderful avenues present themselves because of the collaborative spirit at Duke.”

Dr. Tawney’s post-retirement plans include spending more time on the pickleball court, staying involved with the athletes using prosthetics to play pickleball, taking long walks with his family’s beloved yellow Labrador retriever, Luna, and getting in better workouts on the Peloton.

Congratulations and best wishes, Dr. Tawney!
