Student Spotlight: Judean Griffith, OTD Class of 2024
Q: What motivated you to choose a career in OTD?
A: I wanted a career that would intertwine creativity with helping people live optimal lives. I have always noticed the health disparities in communities like mine, where there is a massive influx of Caribbean and African immigrants and Black and Latinx people. I have been especially drawn to eradicating the high mortality rates for Black birthing persons. I want to bridge that healthcare gap while promoting an inclusive environment.
Q: As we navigate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) - from your perspective, what would you want your OTD colleagues to know?
A: The soapbox that I will continue to stand on regarding DEI initiatives is that representation truly matters, along with accountability and intentional work. DEI is more than an acronym, hashtag, or objective. It is why I could attend an institution like Duke today and pursue my goals. It is the lived experiences and realities of others and why most of us chose the OT journey. To help people fully participate in the things and places they deem meaningful.
Q: Are you involved in any programs, projects, or groups at Duke or within the community that you would like to feature?
A: I am the current Co-Chair of the Duke University Chapter of the Coalition of Occupational Therapists for Advocacy and Diversity (COTAD). I also serve as Advocacy chair for the Duke OTD Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA).
