We were honored to receive and unveil a portrait of William Singleton Ogden, MD, (1940-2021) from his family at the Tenth Annual George S.E. Aitken, MD Lecture.

Recognized as a pioneer and mentor at Duke, he completed a medical internship at the University of Virginia, followed by a year of general surgery and four years of orthopaedic residency at Duke. While there, he developed the Ogden Band and Plate, revolutionizing the management of periprosthetic fractures when manufactured in 1976.

He received the National Cancer fellowship in 1967; the Piedmont Orthopedic Society and American Academy of Cerebral Palsy fellowships in 1968; the Southern Medical fellowship in 1969; and the South Medical Association Research Award in 1970. The residents selected Dr. Ogden for the Frank Bassett Teaching award and he was the person to receive this award who was not geographically based from Duke. He was also committed to advancing the Duke Orthopaedic surgery program through philanthropy and served as chairman of the Piedmont Orthopedic Foundation for several years.
