Medical, Dental, & Vision

Duke employees, including trainees, can choose from 4 different health plans subsidized for residents and fellows. Individuals may choose coverage for themselves or for children and/or a spouse or same-sex partner. Additionally, Duke Primary Care offers a concierge scheduling line for GME residents and fellows to facilitate their ability to establish care for themselves or immediate family members—review options here.

Disability & Life Insurance

Trainees are provided with specific disability and life insurance policies and can purchase additional disability and life insurance coverage at attractive rates.

Stipend

The stipends for Duke trainees are based on post-graduate year (number of years of training). Stipends are anticipated to increase yearly and are generally announced in the Spring. Current stipends can be viewed on the Duke Graduate Medical Education website.

Time-Off (Vacation/Meetings)

Residents may take paid time off during orthopaedic rotations. Residents may present a paper at a meeting beside their chosen meeting or vacation.

  • PGY1 residents receive two weeks per year
  • PGY1 residents receive a few days for the USMLE Step 3
  • PGY2-PGY5 residents receive three weeks per year
  • All receive Christmas or New Year's holiday time off

Resident Education Fund

Residents are given an educational allotment to finance orthopaedic textbooks and scientific meetings. Residents can access funding from their Faculty Research Advisor for podium and poster presentations. Scientific meetings must meet the approval of the program director.

Contract–Agreement of Appointment

Duke University Hospital offers training programs in 100 ACGME-accredited programs and many special fellowships. An example of the “Contract – Agreement of Appointment” may be viewed on the Duke Graduate Medical Education website.

Additional Benefits

Residents receive fringe benefits (covered by the hospital); including, meals (on-call), pager, parking, uniforms (lab coats), and access to the 24-hour House Staff Gym located on Duke's main campus.
