The diversity of the Association of Rheumatology Professionals (ARP) membership has been a significant draw for Adam Goode, PT, DPT, PhD, from the very beginning. It not only inspired him to join the organization more than a decade ago but continues to motivate him as he steps into the role of ARP president.
Dr. Goode’s expansive career reflects his deep commitment to improving patient care through a multifaceted approach. His academic journey began with an Associate of Science degree as a physical therapist assistant from the College of West Virginia in 1999. He earned a Bachelor of Science in natural science from Mountain State University in 2002 and a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from Duke University in 2005, where he also became a faculty member. With a desire to broaden his scope of expertise, he pursued a doctorate in epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completing it in 2011.
Today, Dr. Goode holds two influential roles at Duke University: vice chair of clinical research and epidemiology in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and professor of orthopaedic surgery. His research focuses on chronic low-back pain, specifically examining biomarkers, magnetic resonance imaging, and artificial intelligence to better understand low-back osteoarthritis and its symptoms.
In addition to his academic and clinical roles, Dr. Goode has demonstrated long-standing dedication to the ARP through extensive volunteer work. His leadership contributions have spanned multiple committees and task forces, including the Clinical Focus Course Task Force, Executive Committee, Committee on Research, Committee on Ethics and Conflict of Interest, and RheumPAC. He has also chaired the Research Subcommittee and co-chaired the joint ACR/ARP Committee on Membership and Awards, further solidifying his commitment to the organization's mission.
With his diverse background in physical therapy, chronic pain, and epidemiology, Dr. Goode is uniquely positioned to lead the ARP into the future, championing initiatives that support a collaborative and inclusive environment for all members.
