Duke Orthopaedics proudly celebrates the recent accomplishments of Dr. Brett Rocos, assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Access Champion, who has been competitively chosen for two prestigious international programs that recognize and foster leadership in spine surgery.
Named to the 2025–26 Scoliosis Research Society L.E.A.D. Program
Dr. Rocos has been selected to join the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) L.E.A.D. Program for 2025–26. L.E.A.D.—which stands for Leadership, Education, and Development—is a highly selective initiative designed to prepare early- to mid-career spine surgeons to become future leaders in the global spine community.
Participants are nominated based on their potential to influence the field beyond the operating room. The program features small-group workshops, mentorship from senior leaders, and training in communication, decision-making, and teamwork. While technical skill is essential, the L.E.A.D. curriculum highlights broader leadership development—such as cross-cultural collaboration, guiding professional societies, and shaping the future of spine care.
“I’m honored to represent Duke in this international program,” said Dr. Rocos. “It’s an incredible opportunity to grow as a leader and contribute to the advancement of spine surgery worldwide.”
Recipient of the 2025–26 International Spine Study Group Travelling Fellowship
Along with the L.E.A.D. Program, Dr. Rocos has received the 2025–26 International Spine Study Group (ISSG) Traveling Fellowship. This esteemed fellowship allows spine surgeons to visit top centers of excellence in spinal deformity care around the world.
Over several weeks, Dr. Rocos will observe complex surgeries, exchange ideas with international thought leaders, and explore various approaches to treating severe spinal conditions. The fellowship promotes not only technical learning but also the growth of a worldwide network of mentors and collaborators.
“The ISSG Fellowship is about more than surgical technique—it’s about building relationships, sharing research, and driving innovation in spine care,” said Dr. Rocos. “I’m excited to bring these insights back to Duke and help improve outcomes for our patients.”
Duke Orthopaedics congratulates Dr. Rocos on these remarkable achievements and eagerly anticipates the positive impact his leadership will bring to our department, our patients, and the global spine community.
