On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the Duke School of Medicine honored one of its largest classes of retiring faculty with emeritus status at a special celebration dinner held at the JB Duke Hotel. Among the distinguished honorees were Dr. David Attarian, MD, and Dr. Robert Fitch, MD, of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, recognized for their decades of exceptional service to Duke University.
The title of Distinguished Emeritus is a prestigious honor awarded by the Duke University Board of Trustees to faculty members who have made significant contributions to the clinical, educational, and research missions of the School of Medicine, the Department of Medicine, and the broader Duke community. Nominees are selected by their respective schools and departments for their enduring impact and leadership.

This year’s Emeriti Dinner was co-hosted by Dean Mary Klotman of the School of Medicine and Dean Michael Relf of the School of Nursing, bringing together colleagues, family, and friends to celebrate the careers and legacies of these esteemed faculty members.
Dr. Attarian and Dr. Fitch leave behind a legacy of excellence in orthopaedic care, mentorship, and innovation. Their dedication has shaped the next generation of physicians and advanced the field of orthopaedic surgery at Duke and beyond. Congratulations!
