Empowering Care: Duke's Dry Needling Innovation

The North Carolina Orthopaedic Clinic (NCOC), part of Duke Health, launched a new Dry Needling treatment service—offering patients a non-surgical, evidence-based option for managing musculoskeletal pain. Led by Jorge Islas, MS, LAT, ATC, Cert.DN, CES, PES, and collaborating with NCOC Healthcare Administrator Jacob Webster, this initiative marks a significant advancement in conservative care and provider empowerment.

Dry needling involves inserting thin, filament needles into specific trigger points within muscles. Unlike acupuncture, it is based on Western neuroanatomy and modern musculoskeletal science. It aims to reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore function—making it a valuable choice for patients with chronic pain, muscle tightness, or sports-related injuries.

“This initiative empowers Athletic Trainers and other certified team members to practice at the top of their scope,” said Webster. “Islas led the development and successful implementation of Dry Needling services as a conservative treatment option for patients. Through cross-departmental collaboration, we established a pathway for Athletic Trainers to become credentialed providers at Duke, enabling them to confidently and competently deliver Dry Needling services."
