We’re delighted to welcome Millicent Brown, DPM, as a medical assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke. With a strong foundation in podiatric medicine and a passion for limb salvage, Dr. Brown brings both expertise and heart to her new role.
Dr. Brown earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) from Temple University in Pennsylvania in 2009. She is board-certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, demonstrating her commitment to delivering exceptional patient care and clinical expertise.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Brown finds happiness in nature and connection. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, and visiting botanical gardens—especially when she travels.
“When I visit a new city, I always try to find its botanical garden,” she says. “I’m fortunate that my favorite one, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, is right here in Durham.”
Dr. Brown chose to specialize in limb salvage within podiatry because of its life-changing impact.
“It’s incredibly gratifying to help save a limb—and essentially a life,” she shares. “It gives me purpose and a sense of pride.”
She’s enthusiastic about the collaborative spirit at Duke. “I value interaction with other medical professionals. Together, we can provide an interdisciplinary approach to delivering excellent care to mutual patients at Duke Raleigh and across the Duke Health System.”
Dr. Brown is from Wheatley Heights, a hamlet in Long Island, New York, and offers a rich mix of experience and perspective in her work in North Carolina.
She sees a bright future for podiatry at Duke. “I envision the presence of podiatry within the Duke Health System growing significantly over the next five to ten years, especially as our subdepartment expands.”
