Ortho Departmental Updates – Oct. 18, 2023

  • Reminder: Keep an open mind when dealing with conflicts. Considering each side and coming together will make us stronger as we work together on our future.
     
  • A DHIP faculty meeting will be held this afternoon (10/23) to discuss possible compensation model changes.
     
  • Welcome new faculty member Kathryn O’Connor to our foot and ankle division. She will be located at NCOC and looks forward to working with trainees.
     
  • WebMD and Medscape partnered to name the 65 best hospitals for orthopaedic care in 2023 based on survey data from thousands of patients and providers. Duke Ortho was the only site in the state of North Carolina.
     
  • National Chiropractic Health Week – October features National Chiropractic Health Month. There is a focus on Relieve, Restore, Resume, and Chiropractic care’s role in pain and chronic conditions.  We celebrate and appreciate the care Doctors of Chiropractics in our department and the community provide to our patients. 
     
  • Sterile Processing Week (formerly International Central Service Week) recognizes the committed specialists who do a stellar job in sterile processing, which is critical to our ability to provide surgical care. Please thank those who perform this work for us.
     
  • Resident selection processes – If faculty are interested in participating in our resident matching process, let Wendy Thompson know.  Dr. Fitch and his team will organize the process.
     
  • Review of Adult Reconstruction this week – we are undertaking a routine periodic review to provide insight into how we can improve. Thanks for participating, and let Dr. Alman know if you have any comments you want the reviewers to hear. 
     
  • We are close to hiring an external firm to help us refresh our strategic plan, and more will soon be forthcoming.
     
  • You'll need to get the flu vaccine by Nov. 7. 
     
  • We distributed a survey to get feedback on our department's social events. Results indicated a desire to have an event in Wake County. We are following through on this suggestion. Remember: everyone is invited to attend these events.
     
  • Oct. 31: Halloween Celebration in the IPE from 11 to 1 p.m. Lunch will be served—prizes will be awarded for best group and individual costumes.
     
  • Dec. 8: Dept. Holiday Night at the Bowlero venue in Durham – please join us!
