The School of Medicine Office for Faculty announced the 2025 Leadership Development for Researchers (LEADER) Program cohort of 24. Among this year’s participants is Peter G. Passias, MD, professor of Orthopaedic and Neurological Surgery in the Duke Spine Division. Dr. Passias also serves as associate chief of the Spine Division and medical director of the Spine Research Program.
Reflecting on his participation in the program, Dr. Passias said, "I hope to gain additional skills from an experienced group of leaders to help encourage and motivate my colleagues from diverse backgrounds and training to work together collaboratively to grow the strength of our division, department, and ultimately the care we provide as an institution."
The LEADER Program is designed specifically for junior faculty at the forefront of leading research groups and driving independent research agendas. The program equips participants with critical leadership and team-building skills while guiding them in managing scientific laboratories and research programs. Participants will learn to enhance productivity, foster creativity, and harness innovation within their teams.
Developed to bridge the gap between scientific expertise and essential management skills, the LEADER Program prepares participants to excel as leaders in academic medicine. By addressing the unique challenges of managing research programs, the curriculum supports faculty in their dual roles as scientists and managers of small business units within an academic setting.
Dr. Passias added, "I was encouraged to apply and learn more about successful techniques in assisting and developing research and patient care teams, particularly those methods tailored to Duke Health's unique culture and environment."
Congratulations to Dr. Passias and all the 2025 LEADER Program participants! We look forward to seeing the impact of your leadership and innovation within the Duke community and beyond.
