Riding the Wave: A Collaborative Win for Orthopaedics at Arringdon

Over the past two months, Duke Orthopaedics’ Foot and Ankle Division at Arringdon has led a bold pilot of a new care delivery model—Wave Scheduling—designed to streamline patient flow and elevate the care experience. This initiative was made possible through close collaboration with the Ortho Arringdon clinic team, DHAS, DHIP Operations, Performance Excellence, and the Department of Orthopaedics.

Wave Scheduling reimagines the traditional appointment structure by front-loading visits at the top of each hour and fostering a flexible, team-based approach to care. The results have been impressive: a 6.5-minute reduction in patient cycle time, from check-in to visit completion. This improvement not only boosts operational efficiency but also reflects a deeper commitment to patient-centered care.

The success of this pilot underscores what’s possible when innovation meets teamwork. It’s a testament to the dedication of every individual involved—and a promising step forward in how Duke Orthopaedics delivers care.

The pilot’s success sets the stage for broader adoption and continued refinement. With improved satisfaction across clinicians, staff, and patients, this initiative is a shining example of what’s possible when we think differently, work together, and put patients first – Brittany Komansky, VP of Operations.
