On the morning of September 14, the 17th Annual Strike Out for Sarcoma 5K & Family Fun Walk brought together an inspiring community of fighters, survivors, families, clinicians, and supporters — all united by one mission: to strike out sarcoma.

Hosted by the Duke Sarcoma Center in partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute and Duke Orthopaedic Surgery, the event raised an impressive $52K to support innovative sarcoma research and patient care initiatives at the Duke Sarcoma Center. Every step taken and every dollar donated helps fuel progress, hope, and brighter futures for those affected by this rare and often underfunded cancer.
The event also saw a significant rise in attendance, with 308 registered participants—almost 30% more than in 2024—reflecting the growing momentum and community support for this cause.
The morning started with an inspiring keynote by Marie (Bernadette) Burton, a sarcoma survivor and paddling coach from Wilmington. Diagnosed in 2023, Marie shared her story of resilience and explained how Duke Sarcoma Center helped her return to water and complete a 110-mile paddle along the North Carolina coast.
“We have choices to make in life,” Burton told the crowd. “Sarcoma research and support are underfunded, so we need events like this to uplift each other. I want to thank you for being here — get involved as much as you can. I know some days are tough, but showing up for yourself matters. Choose joy.”
Her message resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom have been personally affected by sarcoma. The event included heartfelt moments, a sense of community, and a shared commitment to advancing research and treatment.
Participants enjoyed a variety of activities, including a survivor’s walk honoring patients and families, an adventurous 5K cross-country course for runners and walkers, giant kids’ lawn games, a bounce house, a group Zumba warm-up, delicious food, and plenty of warm hugs that brought together this vibrant and resilient community.

Duke Sarcoma Center physicians Dr. Brian Brigman, Dr. Will Eward, Dr. Julia Visgauss, Dr. Nicole Larrier, and Dr. Richard Riedel were also recognized for their dedication to patients and their leadership in sarcoma treatment and research.
A special thanks goes out to the event coordinators who generously donated their time to organizing, running, and promoting this annual event: Mitenna Allen, Jennifer Curtin, Colleen Forbes, Olivia Franek, D’Ann George, Susan George James, Marie Abigail Kunz, Nolan Miller, and Pamela Penningar.
