From Symptoms to Recovery: Guiding Patients Through Hairline Fractures

In a recent Duke Health blog article, Dr. Robert Tisherman, assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke, shared his expertise on diagnosing and treating hairline fractures—small but significant bone injuries often caused by repetitive stress. Drawing on his experience in sports medicine, Tisherman emphasized the importance of early recognition and individualized care.

“The typical story is that somebody started long-distance running, or went back to football after summer break, or changed their running shoes so that their arch is supported differently,” said Tisherman. “If you’re feeling a lot of pain in just one spot anytime you walk a certain distance, then it’s time to get an X-ray from your primary care physician or an orthopaedic surgeon.”

Tisherman also discussed treatment options ranging from rest and crutches to advanced therapies and surgery, depending on the fracture's severity and location. His insights help patients better understand when to seek care and how to support healing effectively.
