Tawana Reed, SHRM-CP, Operations Manager for the Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Division and Human Resource Support Coordinator in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has received the Dean’s Community and Culture Impact Staff Award—an accolade recognizing her outstanding leadership in cultivating an inclusive, supportive, and people-focused workplace.
Since joining DPT in 2022, Reed has actively contributed to enhancing culture, trust, and collaboration within the DPT Division and the wider department. Her thoughtful and intentional leadership approach has helped foster an environment where faculty, staff, and students feel valued, supported, and connected.
“Being nominated and receiving this award is truly an honor,” Reed expressed. “It confirms that my efforts to support team members and promote a positive environment are appreciated and recognized by colleagues daily. While I don’t seek awards, it’s gratifying to see the positive influence I’ve had on faculty and staff."
Reed plays a multifaceted role, overseeing key operational, financial, and human resources activities that are essential to the success of the DPT program and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. She manages staff recruitment, onboarding, performance assessments, compliance, and professional development, while also supervising business operations, budgeting, and divisional planning. Additionally, her duties include overseeing staff academic functions, such as admissions and curriculum management, as well as coordinating important milestones, such as orientation, White Coat ceremonies, and graduation.
Beyond these duties, Reed’s most impactful work focuses on people.
When she joined the division, it faced challenges such as staff turnover and a lack of clear structures. Through steady, empathetic leadership, she helped rebuild trust and develop a culture based on fairness, transparency, and accountability. She collaborated with staff to create clear processes and standard operating procedures, ensuring consistent expectations and inclusive participation.
“I build a positive and inclusive culture by leading with respect, empathy, and purpose," Reed said. “I am mindful that not all voices are equally heard, so I make deliberate efforts to include those who are quieter or less visible.”
Reed highlights accessibility and fostering connection in her leadership approach. She consistently holds one-on-one meetings, promotes open communication, and creates opportunities for team members to exchange ideas, tackle challenges, and advance professionally. Her commitment to inclusion is evident in initiatives such as encouraging staff to use intercultural development tools and to participate in team meetings for collaborative discussions and community growth.
Rather than focusing on a single project, Reed views the award as a recognition of consistent, relationship-based efforts over time.
"This acknowledgment reflects the daily work and relationships I’ve developed," she said. “I approach interactions with curiosity, advocacy, support, fairness, and problem-solving to create a space where people feel comfortable reaching out.”
Colleagues describe Reed as a dependable, trusted leader who approaches challenges with fairness, sincerity, and compassion. Her leadership has improved staff engagement, fostered stronger collaboration, and cultivated a more inclusive work environment—outcomes that enhance the division’s excellence in education and operations.
Her leadership style is adaptable and people-centered, rooted in understanding that every team member has unique strengths and needs.
“My approach is tailored to the individuals I support,” Reed explained. “I aim to meet where they are—whether providing guidance, coaching, or simply listening—creating a supportive and productive team environment.”
Reed also often supports broader HR and operational needs across the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, especially during transitions or periods of high demand. Her consistent and caring leadership has strengthened continuity and eased strain on teams.
For Reed, the most meaningful aspect of her work is contributing to a community driven by its mission.
"Helping to uphold a DPT program recognized for healthcare education leadership and supporting faculty, staff, and students who make it possible is incredibly rewarding," she said. “I’m grateful to be part of this team.”
Through her dedicated focus on people, culture, and community, Tawana Reed embodies the values honored by the Dean’s Community and Culture Impact Staff Award. Her leadership continues to strengthen and connect the Duke DPT community—creating an environment where individuals and teams can thrive.
