Dr. Jocelyn Wittstein, MD, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Duke Health sports medicine surgeon, is helping readers take charge of their long-term health in her new book, The Complete Bone and Joint Health Plan: Help Prevent and Treat Osteoporosis and Arthritis.
Co-authored with sports dietitian and personal trainer Sydney Nitzkorski, the book offers practical, science-backed strategies for maintaining bone and joint health through diet and exercise. Dr. Wittstein also recently appeared on CNN’s Shift Your Mindset series, where she discussed how small lifestyle changes today can lead to a stronger, more active future.
"Most people don’t realize that bone mineral density (BMD) peaks at around age 30. After that, your goal is to maintain your BMD and try to slow down bone loss. For women, bone density decreases by about 1% annually until menopause, and then it accelerates to 2% per year. Men experience a roughly 1% annual decline in fertility. The key is to build a strong foundation early and continue supporting your bone and joint health throughout your life," shared Dr. Wittstein.
