Dr. Dickens is a sports medicine-trained orthopaedic surgeon interested in advancing the field of athlete and patient care through a combination of expert clinical/surgical treatment and high-end translational research. In his military career, he served as the Chief of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Service at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Vice-Chair of Surgery at Uniformed Services University, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to the White House Medical Unit, and President of the United States, and Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Beyond his clinical practice, his current research at DSSI and the VA focuses on optimizing the clinical outcomes following the surgical treatment of cartilage, tendon and ligament injuries to the knee and shoulder. This includes a multicenter, prospective randomized clinical trial where he serves as the co-PI to determine the optimal surgical approach for the management of multiligamentous knee injuries as well as another trial evaluating the surgical treatment of shoulder instability with bone loss.
