The date, November 11, 1918, marked the end of the First World War (within the 11th hour of the day of the 11th month). The day was initially celebrated as Armistice Day and became Veterans Day in the 1950s when it was expanded to honor veterans of all wars. We continue to celebrate Veterans Day every November 11, paying tribute to the selfless service of the men and women of our armed forces.
On this Veterans Day (and indeed every day), I encourage you to consider and recognize our veterans for their service to the nation and us. They put their lives on the line for our country.
Please join me in extending gratitude for their courage and dedication. We’re honored to have colleagues in the Duke Orthopaedic Surgery Department who are veterans. Also, join me in thanking those who treat our veterans – in our hospitals at Duke, our VA hospitals, and elsewhere. It is an honor and privilege to care for those who served.
All the best,
Ben
