Ortho Departmental Updates – Nov. 8, 2023

  • Anna Miller, MD, gave a grand rounds presentation about birds and the natural world - and its relationship to what we encounter as physicians in multiple aspects of our lives. In a related occurrence, the American Ornithological Society (AOS) recently announced that English birds would be renamed to remove negative conniptions around some of the names. Dr. Miller and I discussed using analogies from this to reconsider the terminology we use for things in orthopaedics.

  • One in ten physicians consider an attempt of suicide. North Carolina has a very high rate. Dr. Miller gave us food for thought on how to prevent suicide amongst ourselves, colleagues, friends, and family members.

  • It’s Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor those who lived on this land before the settlers from outside North America arrived. Our region of North Carolina has a rich history – three NC tribes: Eno, Tuscarora, and Occaneechi. The Occaneechi tribe is working to establish a Native American Heritage Center in Alamance County, and the ENO tribe had a city near modern-day Durham named Adshusheer. Please join me in recognizing those who lived on the land that Duke and Durham are situated on.

  • It’s #MSPWeek! Duke Ortho's medical service professionals work tirelessly to verify that our medical providers are trained to care for patients safely. Please thank these essential individuals.

  • Congratulations to Blake Boggess, MD, on a recent Nature Medicine article discussing a large clinical trial that studied Cell-based versus corticosteroid injections for knee pain in osteoarthritis: a randomized phase 3 trial. The study was a phase 2/3, four-arm parallel, multicenter, single-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial with 480 patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, showing no difference between treatment arms.

  • Please join me in congratulating our colleague Madison Celentano – an Athletic Trainer at Duke Orthopaedics of Apex, for going above and beyond for her patient at the Duke Ortho Apex Clinic, who was there for a simple follow-up visit. Madison ensured the patient could get right in for the ultrasound, which was positive for bilateral DVTs. The patient was admitted and treated and is doing well. She saved a life!

  • Nov. 11 is Veteran’s Day, and we honor and thank the men and women who served our country. It is celebrated on the 11th hour, on the 11th day, in the 11th month of the year when the fight ended during World War I. It began as Armistice Day in 1918. We thank you for your service.

  • Nov. 15: Combined Grand rounds feature the Association of Women Surgeons, 7-8 a.m., 2002 Duke North and hybrid. The room is tight, so get there early!

  • Dec. 8: Dept. Holiday Night at the Bowlero venue in Durham – please join us.
