Duke Ortho Volunteer Supports the 2024 Season of Hope Radiothon

The 2024 Season of Hope culminated with a remarkable show of support for Duke Children’s Hospital, raising an astounding $627,470.50 through the 30th anniversary of the MIX 101.5 Radiothon. This event aired over two days in December and shared powerful stories of healing, hope, and the exceptional care provided at Duke Children’s. All funds raised will go directly toward funding clinical care, pediatric research, and educational initiatives that support the ongoing care of young patients and their families.

Among the volunteers lending a hand during this special event was Cindy Sparrow, special assistant in clinical programs at Duke Orthopaedics. This was her first year volunteering, and she found it to be an incredibly moving experience. "I was honored and humbled to be a part of this event, especially since I had never done it before," she shared. "I had always heard about the Radiothon but never had the chance to participate. When I saw an email from Dr. Alman encouraging us to 'give back' during this time of year, I decided to sign up."

Cindy and other volunteers prepared activity packets for students who had to drop out of school due to prolonged hospital stays. The packets, designed by the Duke Children's team, help keep these young patients engaged in their education while away from the classroom. Volunteers like Cindy also assembled creative activity bracelet kits for children visiting the Duke Emergency Room, providing a comforting and fun distraction during what can often be a stressful experience.

"The work we did felt so personal and meaningful," Cindy recalled. "I didn’t realize that if children are hospitalized for an extended period and miss school, they are enrolled in Duke School. We helped put together packets for teachers to send to these students so they can continue their studies while in the hospital. Knowing that our efforts were making a difference, even in a small way, was a great feeling."

In addition to her hands-on contributions, Cindy was deeply moved by the stories shared during the Radiothon. “I had a couple of people reach out to me after hearing one of the interviews on the radio. They were touched by the stories of families who had been a part of Duke Children’s Hospital and wanted to know how they could help. It was incredible to see how many people are willing to support this cause, and it made me even more proud to be part of this team."

The success of the 2024 Radiothon, made possible by volunteers like Cindy, would not have been possible without the generosity of individuals and organizations who came together to support Duke Children’s. As Cindy reflects on the event, she emphasizes the long-term impact of these contributions. "It’s so much more than just raising funds. It’s about coming together as a community to ensure these children have the resources, care, and support they need to heal and thrive."

While the Radiothon is over for the year, there is still time to contribute to the Season of Hope campaign. Donations will continue to support critical needs at Duke Children's, including clinical care, research, and the provision of vital educational resources.

She shared, "I hope more people will get involved next year, whether volunteering or donating. Every little bit makes a huge difference in these children's and their families' lives."
