His active involvement in organizations like the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and Duke's Pathway to Orthopaedic Mentorship (DPOM) reflects his dedication to both personal growth and contributing to the medical community.

DJ’s decision to join the Duke SNMA was pivotal in his medical school career. For DJ, SNMA has been more than just an organization—it has been a source of support, guidance, and connections.

“Rigorous academics, leadership development, and community outreach have marked my time as a Duke medical student,” DJ said. “Becoming a member of the SNMA was pivotal for me. It has provided me with a sense of belonging and purpose, aligning perfectly with my passion for supporting underrepresented communities in medicine."

The SNMA, a nationwide student-run organization for medical students of color, is dedicated to ensuring the success and empowerment of minority medical students while promoting diversity and cultural competence within the medical field. For DJ, the SNMA has been a space where he can connect with like-minded peers, navigate the unique challenges faced by minority students, and develop leadership skills that will shape his approach to patient care and advocacy.

“As a minority student, the challenges are unique,” DJ explained. “SNMA has helped me to develop the resilience and confidence needed to succeed while staying grounded in my commitment to support underrepresented communities.”

Mentorship: A Core Value Across Organizations

One of the most rewarding aspects of DJ’s involvement with organizations like SNMA, DPOM, and AAOS has been the opportunity for mentorship.

“Mentorship has been a cornerstone of my experience in these organizations,” DJ said. “Through SNMA and DPOM, I’ve learned about the importance of representation and built meaningful relationships with mentors who have shaped my career trajectory.”

DPOM, a mentorship program that fosters confidence and supports students on their path to orthopaedics, has been particularly influential in DJ’s growth. The structured mentorship curriculum has given him invaluable insights into orthopaedics, helping him refine his skills and understanding of the field.

“The mentorship I’ve received through DPOM has given me the tools and confidence to pursue orthopaedics with a sense of purpose,” he shared. “It’s not just about technical knowledge; it’s about leadership, communication, and navigating the unique challenges that come with being in a minority group in the medical field.”

In addition to DPOM, the AAOS has opened doors for DJ to expand his professional network, gaining access to a broader community of orthopaedic experts. The association has also exposed him to the latest advancements in orthopaedics, motivating him to continue striving for excellence.

When asked what advice he would give to medical students who have yet to join organizations like SNMA, DJ was clear: Get involved.

“Student organizations like DPOM and SNMA provide critical support systems and networking opportunities that are hard to replicate elsewhere,” DJ said. “These organizations offer more than camaraderie—they serve as professional development and advocacy centers, providing inspiration, guidance, and the resources needed to thrive in medical school and beyond.”

DJ encouraged hesitant students to take the first step by attending an event or connecting with a current member. His journey demonstrates the value of these organizations as a support system and a platform for personal and professional growth.

“If you’re unsure, just start by attending an event,” he advised. “The inspiration and resources available to help you succeed are truly invaluable. These groups will support you through the challenges and motivate you throughout your medical journey.”

The Mission of Duke SNMA

Duke’s chapter of SNMA shares DJ’s commitment to enriching, empowering, and enlightening students of color at Duke University. The organization’s mission is clear: to ensure that students of color have the tools, resources, and mentorship to succeed as leaders in the medical field and within the greater Durham community.

As DJ’s experience illustrates, SNMA is essential in creating a sense of belonging for underrepresented students while fostering the leadership skills necessary to drive change in healthcare and society. By focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion, Duke SNMA helps prepare future leaders like DJ to make a lasting impact.

Looking Ahead

As DJ continues his medical school journey, he remains dedicated to the values that have guided his involvement in SNMA, DPOM, and AAOS. His work to uplift underrepresented communities and advocate for diversity in medicine is just beginning, and he is excited about the opportunities ahead to contribute meaningfully to orthopaedics.

"I am determined to make a difference,” he said. “Being a part of these organizations has shown me the power of mentorship and community. I hope to pay it forward by helping the next generation of students behind me."

DJ’s passion, commitment, and leadership will inspire many as he continues to grow in his career. His experiences with SNMA and AAOS will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on his journey toward becoming a compassionate and impactful physician.
