Morgan Stickney Wins Gold and Sets World Record at Paralympic 2024 Games in Paris

(Sept. 4 Update: Morgan Stickney Claims Silver for USA in 100m Freestyle S7)

I am delighted that Morgan Stickney won a Gold medal and Set a new World Record at Paralympic 2024 Games in Paris.

Morgan has a rare condition that resulted in the loss of her legs and required multiple orthopaedic operations. Will Eward, MD, is her surgeon at Duke, and he was present in Paris to witness her win.

She dominated the field in the 400-meter freestyle SM7 final, winning by 17 seconds and setting a Paralympic record time of 4:53.88. SM7 is for medley swimmers with movement affected from a low to moderate level in the arms, trunk, and legs, moderately down one side, those with short stature, or the absence of limbs.

Morgan told the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, “It means the world to me. My surgeon, who initially amputated my legs, is here. My other surgeon, who had to re-amputate my leg, is here, and my doctor, who taught me how to walk, is here. It’s just an incredible group that’s up in the stands. My family is here, and they’ve been through it all with me. My mom has spent a third of the year in the hospital with me every single day, every single night. My dad quit his job and moved to North Carolina so I could live out my dreams, so it’s an honor to be here.”

Please join me in congratulating Morgan and cheering her on as she competes at the Games.

This Duke Ortho news blog discusses Morgan and Will Eward's role in her treatment.

All the best,
Ben

(l to r) Will Eward, MD, and Morgan Stickney celebrate with Team USA supporters

It was challenging for Dr. Eward to put the experience into words. He shared, "First, I was nervous for Morgan. I don't know why – she's the one racing! Second, it was incredible to think about all her dedicated hours at the pool, training alone with her coach. Then, to see her triumphantly win medals for Team USA in front of this sold-out crowd in Europe's largest indoor arena was inspirational and truly marvelous to watch."
