Clinic Connections: Ensuring Patient Safety Through Vigilance–Great Catch, Michaele!

While completing documentation, Michaele Harrison, RN, Orthopaedic Technologist, Duke Orthopaedics at Arringdon, identified an error: the wrong limb was listed for surgery. With the surgery scheduled for the next day, Michaele appropriately escalated the issue to ensure the correct limb was reflected in the documentation and the surgery order.

This proactive action prevented the risk of the patient undergoing surgery on the wrong limb, aligning perfectly with the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goal of avoiding mistakes in surgery.

Thank you, Michaele, for your unwavering commitment to excellence, thorough attention to detail, and dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of every patient you serve. Your actions exemplify the core values of patient safety and clinical integrity that should be at the heart of every healthcare practice.
