Duke OTD at the Rehabilitation Medicine’s Annual International Conference

Duke OTD student Lunar Singsomphone ('24) presented at the American Congress for Rehabilitation Medicine’s Annual International Conference in Chicago.  Lunar delivered “An International Discussion about Spatial Neglect: A Call for Action.” OTD faculty member Dr. Kimberly Hreha also attended the conference and presented during the discussion about spatial neglect.

He didn’t always have an awareness of it or a word for it, but Christopher Lunsford, MD, was affected by ableism throughout his life. It affected how he coped with the challenges that came with being hard of hearing since birth and having a speech impediment. It wasn’t always easy to make his way in a world that focuses mostly on the experiences of people who can hear and speak clearly.  

Thorsten Seyler Voted into Hip Society

At their annual meeting in September, Thorsten M. Seyler, MD PhD, was voted into the Hip Society, an academic by-invitation-only membership org of internationally recognized thought-leaders, innovators, mentors, researchers, and educators. Congratulations! With this accomplishment, the Division of Adult Reconstruction continues to be at the forefront of arthroplasty with members in both Hip and Knee Society (Drs. Bolognesi, Jiranek, Lachiewicz, Seyler), Hip Society (Kelley, Wellman), and Musculoskeletal Infection Society (Jiranek, Seyler).

Jocelyn Wittstein Study Connects Estrogen and Frozen Shoulder in Menopausal Women

According to a study led by Duke Health researchers, post-menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy had a lower risk of developing a painful shoulder condition known as adhesive capsulitis than women who did not receive estrogen.

The study – a collaboration between Dr. Jocelyn Wittstein and Obstetrics & Gynecology – was presented on Oct. 12 at the meeting of the North American Menopause Society meeting in Atlanta.

Congratulations to Trevor Lentz on receiving NIAMS funding for an R21 through a HEAL initiative call. The project is a collaboration with ATI Physical Therapy to evaluate predictors of health care use and outcomes following early access to PT for musculoskeletal pain.

Amy Pastva and Team Receive NIH Funding for Heart Failure Study

The National Institute of Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, recently awarded $30 million over five years to support research to test a novel physical rehabilitation program designed for older patients hospitalized for acute heart failure.

Farshid Guilak Elected Into Three National Academies in 2022

Farshid Guilak, the Mildred B. Simon Research Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and co-director of the Washington University Center for Regenerative Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine and professor of biomedical engineering and of mechanical engineering & materials science in the McKelvey School of Engineering, has been elected this year as a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), and the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).
