Warren Hammert, MD, DDS, Appointed Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Education

We are delighted to announce that Warren C. Hammert, MD, DDS, has been appointed as our Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Education.

Dr. Hammert brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role, particularly in education. He has successfully directed a fellowship program for several years and recently concluded his term as the Education Division Director for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). Dr. Hammert is a respected educator who teaches and lectures on various hand and upper extremity conditions at regional, national, and international hand, orthopaedic, and plastic surgery meetings. He has also chaired multiple national hand surgery meetings and courses.

Warren joined our department's hand and upper extremity division in 2022. Before joining Duke, he was the hand and wrist division chief at the University of Rochester for 16 years. Warren earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed a Plastic Surgery Residency at the Cleveland Clinic and a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Hand and Microsurgery at the Hand Center of Western New York.  

Dr. Hammert’s clinical practice encompasses all aspects of hand and wrist surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and microsurgery, treating patients of all ages, from infants to older adults. He specializes in pediatric hand conditions, reconstructive surgery for arthritic and traumatic disorders of the hand and wrist, vascular disorders, and upper extremity nerve disorders. Apart from his clinical work, he actively researches, mainly focusing on patient outcomes.

Originally from Oklahoma, Warren attended college and dental school there before pursuing medical studies in Pennsylvania. He is married to Debi, and they have four grown children.
