An ‘Eye-Opening’ Journey Picking a Medical Specialty

While doing a surgery rotation during his second year of medical school at Duke, Kwabena "Kobi" Adu-Kwarteng, found a passion for orthopaedic surgery.

For his third-year research project, Kobi is working with Duke orthopaedic surgeon Christopher Klifto, MD, studying shoulder injury recovery in older patients.

James K. DeOrio, MD, Featured Speaker at UNC

James DeOrio, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery, recently presented at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Grand Rounds for Orthopaedics.

His lecture was titled "Total Ankle Replacement in the Face of Deformity." 

Dr. DeOrio is a foot and ankle surgeon specializing in ankle arthritis, ankle replacement surgery, and flat foot reconstruction. He shared, "Removing patient's pain and giving them greater mobility is the best gift I could ever give anyone."

Erica D. Taylor, MD, MBA Co-Directs DEI Course at UVA

Erica D. Taylor, MD, MBA, assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), worked with A. Rashard Dacus, MD, Division Head, Orthopaedic Hand and Upper Extremity Service Professor, Vice Chair for Diversity, Inclusion and Clinician Wellness, and Cato Laurencin, MD, PhD, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Disparities to facilitate small group think tank sessions on the ‘How, When, and Why of DEI’ for stakeholders from all areas of healthcare.

Celebrating Radiologic Technologists Week

In November, we celebrate National Radiologic Technology Week. It recognizes the critical work of medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals in patient care and health care safety. The week-long celebration commemorates the discovery of the x-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on Nov. 8, 1895. 

Celebrating National Nurse Practitioner Week

This week, we celebrate National Nurse Practitioner (NP) Week—this talented core of clinicians partner with us to deliver high-quality orthopaedic healthcare.

NPs provide primary, acute, and specialty health care to patients of all ages and walks of life. Tasks include seeing patients, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, making diagnoses, and initiating and managing treatment plans — including prescribing medications.
