Zoe X. Dailiana, MD, orthopaedic hand surgeon and professor, hosted the 79th Congress of the Hellenic Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology as their newly elected President. She is the first female president of the Society and a Duke Fellows alumna. 

This five-year $3.1 million award (total amount) will identify a risk phenotype comprised of biological, psychological, and social factors for up to 450 patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty. This risk phenotype will be then used to predict the risk of chronic post-surgical pain so that novel risk stratification and treatment strategies can be developed and tested for effectiveness in this patient population.

Congratulations to Cesar de Cesar Netto, MD, PhD, who received a 2023 Arthritis Foundation (AF) / American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) Think Tank Grant to support innovations in clinical research that advance knowledge toward treatments to stop or slow osteoarthritis (OA). His study aims to Determine the Traumatic Origins of Ankle OA and the Time to Joint Degeneration.

Q: What brings you joy?
A: I have three adorable and lively Australian Shepherds named Suki, Lincoln, and Abigail (pictured). I was married on August 8, 2022, to my lovely wife Alexis. She and I enjoy visiting friends in Durham/Pittsboro, Raleigh, and Wilmington. 

The Duke Orthopaedic Surgery team enjoyed catching up with colleagues and making new acquaintances at the monthly departmental social event.

A Southern Lee junior varsity football player had to be airlifted to the hospital after being injured during a kickoff at a game on Sept. 16.

The Duke Department of Orthopaedic Surgery experienced a fantastic past year. Still, the future looks even brighter, Chair Benjamin Alman, MD, reported today at the Annual State of the Department event.

“Our department has had an excellent past year, and we are going to have an even better year going forward,” said Dr. Alman told attendees who joined online and in person at the Interprofessional Education and Care Building (IPE).

We have four (soon to be five) Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to help with inpatient care for pediatric orthopaedic patients. 

Meet: Olivia Bergsen, PA-C; Jacinta Curtis, NP; Jenna Gross, NP; and Amanda Northeim, PA-C.

They cover all orthopaedic patients under age 25 if admitted to a pediatric floor, and they can cover up to age 21 on the adult floors if an adolescent or young adult needs pediatric ortho-specific care. We thank these professionals for the expert care they provide.
